National Food Safety Month News

September is National Food Safety Month—created in 1994 to increase awareness of this serious issue. In honor of this, we’re looking at the latest plant sanitation trends and education that positively impact food safety.

Foreign Material Detection & Prevention

Foreign material may not be the first thing to come to mind in the world of food sanitation, but it’s no less important. There have been recent examples where foreign objects—such as bits of plastic, bolts from machinery, or even pests—have caused contaminations and warranted recalls. A robust Foreign Material Control Program is always necessary.

Building a Food Safety Culture

The world has taken notice of the increasing importance of food safety. PSSI has been instrumental in developing a culture that places the utmost importance on food safety. It starts with proper training and building a skilled workforce. Our team of dedicated workers train and pass tests to become PSSI certified and then regularly document their processes in detail with a focus on continuous improvement.

Natural, Fresh and Organic

Consumers are demanding more organic, fresh, and natural foods that require different sanitation methods. PSSI is leading the way with customized sanitation chemicals and programs built to support the specific needs of the growing organic industry.

Designed for Sanitation

Every plant is unique and requires a process tailored to each situation. PSSI focuses on partnering with customers and involving them in the sanitation design to address their specific objectives. Our team develops programs based on a combination of microbiology, operations, and plant management to ensure the highest quality sanitation and food safety possible.

Food Safety Modernization Act

One of the biggest trends is a philosophy shift. Out with the old: simply responding to foodborne illnesses. In with the new: preventing these illnesses in the first place. The FDA has finalized seven rules to implement Food Safety Modernization Act, demonstrating the realization that food illness prevention is the future of food safety. FSMA has been instrumental in guiding how PSSI conducts sanitation design and continuous optimization.

Improvement via Implementing Data

The answers are in the data. We collect, analyze and report anything and everything. That includes water pressure, water temperature, chemical mixtures, application methods and more. We use just in time reporting and dashboard visualizations to use this data immediately recognize and reduce food safety risks, or even provide a visualization of trends that help identify larger issues.
